Father was production manager at the Zsolnay Publishing House. Family had to leave Austria in 1938 for racial and political reasons. All grandparents were Viennese whose ancestors in turn were Austrian Catholics from the Carynthian countryside and Czech Jews. Spent three years with Swiss aunts in Zürich. Father died in 1939 in England. Mother emigrated to the U.S. , obtained her M.S.W. from Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1942 and became a psychiatric social worker. I followed her and attended public school near Cleveland and later private schools in New York City and Vermont. Awarded scholarship to Harvard College in 1946 and graduated magna cum laude in economics in 1950. Worked for room and board . Found the postwar college scene enormously rewarding. G.I. Bill of Rights veterans and civilians made a good mix and produced the most interesting years of the College since its founding in the 17th century. Then went to Harvard Law School. Graduated in 1953. Was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 – 1955. Worked in a general practice law firm in Rochester, N.Y. from 1953 to 1957. Then House Counsel for the R.T.French Company in Rochester until 1962. Enjoyed both. All of my legal career after 1957 spent in corporate law departments in U.S. and Canada, except for two years on assignment, as Chief, Law Department , Finance Administration, City of New York. Member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. Retired Member of the N.Y. Bar.
Married and father of two adult sons. Lived in Canada since 1972. And became dual citizen some time ago. City Councillor of Westmount, a Montreal suburb from 1991 to 1995. Many volunteer activities, some related to the United Church of Canada. Travels in U.S.,Canada, Europe, East Africa, Central America, Australia and New Zealand.
